You can download Photoshop from a variety of sites for free. There are many online resources that will provide tutorials and user guides so you can learn all that Photoshop has to offer. To produce great visuals in the digital age, you need to know Photoshop well. Understanding Photoshop’s operations Photoshop is a vast operation that touches on the whole of digital imaging and graphic arts. Here’s a look at Photoshop’s underlying structure and how you best use its parts: The Basic workspace: Photoshop is set up by default so that you work with raster images — think of pixels — in the Basic workspace. The Layers: A file is made of layers. Each one can hold a single layer of data or a group of overlays. The Channels: Each pixel in an image can be thought of as having three layers of information, which in turn have their own channels of information. These are the RGB channels, which stand for Red, Green, and Blue and inform the image of how the red, green, and blue portions of that image are distributed. The Crop: The final image that you see in Photoshop is a cropped version of your original image, and it’s called the final image in Photoshop. Every layer in Photoshop is a cropped version of an image. The Text tools: Photoshop’s text tools enable you to overlay text on top of an image so that you can edit the text with the image in place. The Slice tool: The Slice tool enables you to easily cut sections out of an image, remove background objects from that section, and then paste that section on top of a new document. The Slice tool provides you with dozens of tools to help you create professional-quality images. The Pencil tool: The Pencil tool enables you to overlay new elements on top of an image and to edit those elements. You can create lines, erase lines, and draw rectangles, circles, and ellipses. You can also draw freehand, and the Pencil tool adds to that by providing a brush window with a variety of options that let you control what happens when you brush or use the pencil to draw with a custom brush. The Brush tool: The Brush tool, shown in Figure 1-1, contains an assortment of brushes that let you paint, blur, or smudge, to name a few. The
