His comments come during a rare glimpse into the company’s internal strategy, including plans to begin offering Netflix, Hulu and other services on Roku TVs.
“We are still growing,” Wood said during a phone interview with The Wall Street Journal. “People aren’t just buying their first set-top box. So we’re still growing the channel portfolio.”
Roku’s latest offer seems designed to attract consumers to their TVs. The company is pitching its streaming media device as a good value, since it costs about $40 and offers the channels owned by partners such as Fox and NBC. Consumers can add additional channels, either with a monthly subscription or via a $3-per-month fee for sports channels like NBC Sports. Roku isn’t addressing the $180 price of the Amazon Fire TV stick, but it offers more than $40 worth of channels for $40.
The Roku TV is headed to retail later this month, and it will cost $80. “We view them as equivalent,” Wood said of Roku’s TV and stick. The new device is bundled with a Roku 3 streaming player, but consumers can buy Roku 3s online for about $60.
“We are trying to differentiate on the value proposition,” Wood said. “It’s why you don’t see a lot of hardware companies that make products for living rooms.”
While Roku is still in the midst of its test market in South Korea, the company recently expanded into India and is adding live channels for users outside the U.S. Roku announced last week that it would begin streaming music, through the Play Music app, as part of its strategy to launch the Netflix app on its devices.

In this study, we investigated the effects of knockdown of PPARα on triiodothyronine (T3)-induced CYP7A1 mRNA expression and its transcriptional activity. PPARα was knocked down using a lentivirus system. Activation of the PPARα/CYP7A1 pathway was demonstrated by overexpression of PPARα in HepG2 cells using a lentivirus system. Upon silencing of PPARα, T3-induced CYP7A1 mRNA expression and enzyme activity were suppressed. Activation of the PPARα/CYP7A1 pathway was demonstrated by the increase in CYP7A1 mRNA expression and enzyme activity with T3. Suppression of PPARα by its knockdown did not affect the basal activity of CYP7A1, suggesting that PPARα is not a positive regulator of CYP7A1.
