Early wrestling (especially B grade to V grade wrestling) is pretty much a parabolic curve. As the level of competition rises, and the amount of money involved increases, the quality of the show decreases. You see this with wrestling shows from the turn of the century, that are physically impossible, due to the need for a dozen superstars on the roster, all of whom are right-handed and wear a crown (or other top). The only reason this happened was because at that time, most states had gambling and football and other taxes. Wrestling was small, with only one TV station carrying it and a handful of half-way sized venues. So, the wrestling was watered down by the greed of the promoters, who needed to attract fans. This is the industry standard – even today. All shows are nationally syndicated, which in turn means that none of the footage is particularly special, or would be recognized in today’s wrestling industry. These matches are basically independent talents in a working, pre-fabricated ring, and then all the guys just do their best to entertain the fans. It would be impossible for wrestling to have survived this. But, wrestling did make a comeback in the 90’s in the form of WCW/WWF, due to the over-the-top TV production and the spur of the internet. Now that wrestling has its own, recognizable professional wrestling arena, it has reached the heights of what it was in the 70’s. So, wrestling is no longer a half-way league where there are two guys wearing silk. Wrestling is the common name for the game of professional wrestling. It all began with a form of wrestling called Greco-Roman wrestling, which became the Olympic sport by the 18th century. The Greco-Roman tradition was adopted by Europeans, Americans, and others, until it became almost the only form of sports in the world. When professional wrestling popped up, it went even further, with the use of fake rules, unrealistic action, and even people being drugged. With television and computers, professional wrestling, or professional wrestling as we know it, moved away from Greco-Roman styles, and began to gain popularity among the average American. This led to the current WWE/WWF model, where the athletes are closer to the average American, with a form of wrestling that is more athletic, and more realistic.
