Let $X,Y$ be topological spaces and $f:X\rightarrow Y$ a continuous function. Let $U\subset Y$ be open. Show that $f^{ -1}(U)$ is an open set.
I have been looking at all the different proofs of this and of course I still do not really see why this is true. Here’s one proof that I came up with (considering $x\in f^{ -1}(U)$). Let $V\subset X$ be an open neighborhood of $f^{ -1}(U)$. Then $f^{ -1}(U)\subset V$ and so there exists $y\in U$ such that $f(y)\in V$. As $f(y)\in U$, then $U=f^{ -1}(U)$ (or is it the other way round?) so $U=f^{ -1}(U)$.
What am I doing wrong? I have the same problem with the other proofs I came across. Why does $f^{ -1}(U)$ always be open? Why does this hold, what’s so special about $f^{ -1}(U)$ and $f$? I don’t see why there exists a $y\in U$ such that $U=f^{ -1}(U)$.
I would like to know the ‘fundamental’ reason of why $f^{ -1}(U)$ is open if $f$ is continuous, so I can do similar proofs (just with $
