The two most commonly used versions of Photoshop are Photoshop CS6 (the current version) and Photoshop CS3, even though the CS6 version contains some changes. You’ll find that this book explains how to use the latest version of Photoshop but doesn’t cover the functions that are unique to CS6.
In this book, you find information on best practices for Photoshop after you import your first image, learn how to prepare your image for manipulation, figure out how to interact with layers, and create custom brushes.
Getting a grip on layers
For this book’s readers, a Photoshop image contains multiple layers. The layers hold the raw data of an image; you can see some of the data in the histogram, as shown in Figure 6-1. You can use layers to add images, adjust exposure, adjust color, add text, add effects, and so on.
Photoshop’s system for managing layers is very flexible. You can create multiple layers on the same image and easily adjust individual layer properties and even combine layers to create a customized palette for many different effects. You can also use different tools to edit the individual layers.

In this chapter, you find out how to create layers and set your preferences to use Photoshop for image manipulation.
Creating a new layer
You can’t manipulate an image without starting with a layer. So the first step in using Photoshop is to create a new layer. After you create a layer, it automatically gets a name, and you then get to your work. If you insert an image into a layer, Photoshop creates a ghost copy of the original image in a second layer called a Merge Layer. In Figure 6-2, you see a second layer after you create a new one.

To create a new layer, follow these steps:
1. Choose Layer⇒New Layer.
Alternatively, you can just press the Ctrl+N key combination or choose Layer⇒New Layer.
The New Layer dialog box opens.
2. In the New Layer dialog box, choose a location in the thumbnail image to place the new layer.

Image editing Raw Editing
The first kind of photo editing involves editing the “raw” files that your camera produces. This includes making adjustments to the exposure, contrast, color balance and brightness. It can also involve removing stains and dust from the image. You may also be able to clean up the lens or change the white balance of your camera.
There are two main kinds of raw files. One is in “TIFF” format and the other is in “JPEG” format. For both these two raw file formats, there are tools available to make adjustments to the file. These tools are covered in greater detail in the Raw editing section below.
Image Editing
These two file formats do not require a special program to process them because the files contain the information needed to do this processing. However, image editing tools usually require you to download some files first.
One kind of image editing is image correction. This involves removing lens flaws, blurring faces, producing smileys, and other tasks. These tools usually require you to download files to your computer first. These files contain the information needed to process these images.
You can, however, view files directly if you have a web browser that supports webp (WebP) files.
Image editing tools are covered in greater detail in the section below.
Raw Editing
Your camera often takes pictures of varying qualities. These images can be edited in Photoshop but this isn’t always possible due to the size of the files. In order to edit those files you can use Adobe’s DNG Converter. The DNG file is a standard image file format that you can open in Photoshop or other programs.
