To use Photoshop, you need to purchase a copy of the program. A stand-alone version is available, but most schools and businesses will have licenses for you to use.
Today’s Photoshop 6 (PS6) is a huge leap forward over previous releases and is touted as the industry standard. It still has a lot of great features, but it also has a number of issues that beginners may find themselves struggling with.
As a photographer, you must use a program like Photoshop to manipulate your images, but keep in mind that what you see isn’t always what is printed. There’s a difference between printing a digital photo and printing a CD-ROM image. Many features of a given version of Photoshop apply to all editions of that version. You don’t have to get the most current version to do everything.
We cover the basics of using Photoshop in Chapter 3.
After you’ve learned the basics, Chapter 6 is a great resource for helping you out in all sorts of ways. It covers all sorts of different tools, techniques, and methods that help you create images in Photoshop.
# Exploring Photoshop’s Layers
One of the most important things to learn about Photoshop is how to work with layers. Layers are the building blocks of all the images you create in Photoshop. You use layers to combine images and effects to make a finished image.
Photoshop doesn’t use layers for “working” on an image. It doesn’t move, resize, or paint a finished image. It does this on a layer. To move an object, resize an object, or draw a line, you place a layer above the object and change its layer settings. Layers are a clean way to keep working on an image.
Although the image is technically created when you save the file, the layers make the finished image. The image is set as a background and nothing else; the layers become the image. You can also save an image as a vector drawing file (vector for short) by turning off the Background layer.
Photoshop offers five basic layers:
* Background layer
* Smart Object layer
* Layer Mask
* Adjustment layer
* Filter layer
These are shown in Figure 3-1. We discuss each in the following sections.

Another great and easy to learn way to use Photoshop Elements is to start a new document.
Open and create a new Photoshop Elements document by pressing the New Document button in the bottom left corner.
Size, Color and Type
Photoshop Elements has a wide range of options for making a new document, but if you’re new to Photoshop Elements, you might be better off starting with the option Custom Size, Type, and Color. You can also use the options Always Specify Size and Measure the Image to start with the custom size and type you like.

To customize the size and type of a new document, you can use the options under Image Size and Type. You can select how big the document will be and what kind of font, style and size you want to use.

Click OK to open the new document and start using Photoshop Elements.

What would I use as a very first training subject?
I am learning about machine learning and I don’t know what would be a good first subject.
My idea was to use some easily recorded data sets like sounds, words and images and try to learn a classification function which maps these patterns to labels.
This way I would get a feeling for how the learning process itself works as well as the concepts it uses to reach a classification function.
In my head this sounds like an impossible research question but I don’t know what you guys recommend here. Any ideas?

If you don’t know which label to assign to a set of input and output data, there is no function. So the first question is which one of the following data-sets is the least labelled so that you can find functions that transform inputs into outputs that would be meaningful.
Images
Handwritten numeric characters
Sound events
Possibly videos in frames
You can of course have equal labelling and average image pixels as an input signal and image pixels as the output signal. But then what does the averaging represent?
How about turning them into some combination of input and output signals? You could label the image pixels based on the coordinates of the points that the average represents. You could transform the image pixels into one of the sound-events based on the average or the number of input signals.
So starting with something simple would be a good strategy. The ideas above are just some starter ideas.
