This book is primarily about Photoshop Elements, a more budget-conscious version of Photoshop. Photoshop Elements makes it easy for you to edit photos and create new designs by enabling you to create raster images, work with layers, adjust the color of an image, and combine multiple images. This book covers the basics of Photoshop Elements as well as the full Photoshop experience, incorporating both into the design in the steps throughout the book.
When you open a file in Photoshop, a new image appears on the screen. You can do a variety of things to the image as you work. As you open a file, the program becomes more active, and you can do more things.
An image has a workspace on the left side of the screen for manipulating it. The workspace consists of several tools and palettes. The Tools panel contains dozens of different tools to manipulate and alter the image. You can use many of these tools to create and alter your image — paint and print out the image, replace the background with a new image, or clip another image over the image, for example. You can use the menus to choose which tools you prefer.
When you work with an image, it can seem like a lot of information is going on at once. You can see why Adobe chose to give the image a workspace. This workspace contains things to distract you from the image you’re working with. The controls and tools you use are brought to a secondary screen so that you have more room to do things on the image itself. Figure 2-1 shows a sample photo and a portion of the workspace.

Photoshop Elements is a pretty simple program, but it’s not an easy program to use. There are some options and settings that can be confusing, even after you read this book. Adobe’s help does a decent job of explaining some of the shortcuts, but it doesn’t cover them all.

Terwilliger Farm
The Terwilliger Farm was a historic farm located near Wilmington, Ogle County, Illinois. The farmhouse was built in 1889 and was the home of Dr. Joseph R. Terwilliger, a physician who operated an unsuccessful farm of the same name. The farmhouse was a two-story Queen Anne-style frame house. It had a three-story tower with a pyramidal roof and an octagonal belvedere. The farmhouse has a wood frame addition of the 1920s.
The farm was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 19, 1980. The farm is currently owned by Brian and Karli Magnus and converted to residential housing.
