If you do use Photoshop, always check the box beside the History and Styles tabs, which enables viewing the previous changes and saved styles. If you see that you have repeatedly modified your image, or if you see that you are missing changes (because you forgot to save them), you can quickly change them. Photoshop can work well with the image-editing features of Lightroom. The two programs together can do a good job of converting your images to monochrome, and then provide adjustments to optimize the colors. Be careful when converting files from one program to another, as the conversion settings in one program don’t always match the settings of the other program. For more information about converting files, see Chapter 12. 10.8 Track Changes Tracking changes is a way to keep multiple versions of your image. While it may seem like a waste of time, tracking changes with images that you’ll be keeping for awhile is a good habit to develop. The following options are part of the Edit menu: Track Changes In the past, only professionals, which included doctors and lawyers, often tracked changes. It became a bad habit until it turned into an essential tool for a contract or other legal document. Now it’s common practice for anyone who wants to track changes with an image. When you make changes in the Edit menu that are identified with a check mark, each edit is stored as a different version of the image. You can then view these changes by using the History panel or use the History tool to select them and then delete them. You can also use the History panel to apply styles to these versions or move them to a new folder. Tracking changes can be a lot of work for a large image, especially for a lot of images, so you might want to use this feature with some of your smaller images. After that, you can decide whether to use this feature for editing your larger images. History Panel To view the tracked changes, click the menu arrow at the top of the panel to open the menu (see Figure 10.9). Click History, and you see the list of changes (see Figure 10.10). This list indicates the date you made the edit, the size of the file, and whether the image is duplicated. Changes that are not duplicate are indicated with an additional check mark. In the History panel, you can use the following options: • **Trash** Clicking this item causes the

Q: Converting pathString to a path in Swift 3 I am trying to convert a pathString (String as a NSString) into a NSBezierPath in Swift 3. I have been trying to do this by using the following method: let path = NSBezierPath(string: pathString) However, it always returns an error. Is there a method that allows me to convert the pathString into a NSBezierPath? A: You’re using the wrong method, try: let path = NSBezierPath(contentsOf: pathString) A: Just for info, I found an efficient way to do it: let path = NSBezierPath(string: pathString) The NSBezierPath is converted to a NSPath more efficiently than using NSBezierPath. A: NSBezierPath is a subclass of NSObject, and not of NSString. It’s not possible to convert from NSString to NSBezierPath. Brushes in Photoshop Brushes (including painting, curves, tools, and pens) can be found on the Brush or Pen Tool panel. Brushes, pens, and other tools can be used in various areas of Photoshop. They can be used to paint, refine, or remove pieces of an image. They can be used to create special effects like torn photos, draw freehand paths, and even trace the edge of a transparent object. Brushes in Photoshop are grouped in five categories: painting, retouching, sketching, drawing, and effects. Use the following list to find the brushes for the various effects and areas of Photoshop. Painting Painting brushes make it easy to create textures or patterns. You can create realistic or abstract patterns, just like in real life, using the paint bucket tool. Crisp texture, rough surface, or checkerboard, and watercolor are all examples of textures that can be created with painting brushes. Use brushes with paint colors and a layer mask to smoothly paint over transparent or masked areas, including water and objects. Brush Tip Use painting brushes to erase, blend, and repair images and layers. The Eraser Tool is not the same thing as painting brushes. If you want to make something disappear or change it, erase or paint over it. Erases Background The Eraser Tool erases what you paint or paint over. Use it to remove distractions from your composition. It’s also useful for removing unwanted objects or details when finishing a painting or graphic design. Show paint colors in a swatch when using a brush that has been made into a pattern. You can paint various colors onto existing objects, remove backgrounds, and create other effects. Resize or drag freehand paths. You can draw straight lines or freehand paths to create a detailed design. You can then edit it, including changing the line width, length, or thickness. Freehand paths can even be filled with color. Brush Tip Filled paths allow you to create complex shapes using lines. Use the Shape Tool to make a new shape or a selection to fill the path with an object or solid color. The dotted rectangle tool also allows you to create a filled path. Paint Shapes Paint shapes are useful for creating organic effects or backgrounds. You can use them to create solid, fuzzy, dotted, or dashed circles and
