In C, it is a compile-time error to change the value of a passed-by-reference parameter. If you pass it by value, the compiler will create a copy of the object and save a reference to that copy. This copy, however, will be a copy-on-write (i.e. as it is copied, whatever changes to the original parameters will be reflected in the copy as well).
Say you have a class A with a member B. You pass this to a function by reference,
void fun(A& a) {…}
Now if a changes it’s member, this will not affect the member b. But if you pass by value,
void fun(A a) {…}
then the new copy of a will change the value of b. The reason behind this is that changing the value in a also changes the address of a (the same pointer value).

The major difference is that passing by reference makes a copy of the original object. So if you want to make changes to the original object, you need to make a copy of it first, and work with that.
Say we want to add a method doSomething() to A:
A a;
a.doSomething();
If we make a copy of the object first:
A b = a;
it is no longer the same object, so even though we made a copy
