A sword fight immediately ensued in which Wallace lost his sword but managed to keep the tall man at bay. The tall man persisted in attacking, but after a few strokes of the sword to the front of Wallace’s chest he suddenly ceased the attack and ran away. As a result of the time it took to even advance the point of his sword, Wallace had to remove his own clothes in order to stop the bleeding.
At that time, one did not even have to lose his shirt to get cut in a duel, as only the front of his shirt was the only part of the uniform which had to be removed. The shirt was always made of tough cloth and any cut could be absorbed by it. Even so, at that time, the result was always fatal. The edge of a sword or the point of a pistol was not sharpened enough to penetrate the heavy clothing and a single thrust could be fatal.
In response, General Wallace designed the most effective clothes for soldiers to fight in: a single shirt, and trousers wide at the ankle, knee, groin and upper thigh, wide on the back at the shoulders, and very wide at the waist, the garments having extra leather at the top and bottom. What these garments accomplished was to keep the round edges of a sword to the front of the body, while the back allowed for an opponent to strike at the back of the head, the top of the back of the neck and shoulder blade.
