## A Brief History
In the 1980s, Adobe developed Photoshop as a new tool to compete with more established desktop publishing programs that worked with vector artwork, such as Illustrator from Adobe (graphics arts company) and Adobe Illustrator. These old programs were more limited than the vector-based program from Adobe and could only handle vector artwork. The implementation of layers and nondestructive editing in the 1990s meant that designers could edit images with raster artwork and then have those edits applied by using the layers to mask out parts of the image. Today, Photoshop is a powerhouse of image editing software with many features, including the ability to do professional work, but the price of that power is a steep learning curve. Any image editing program can make a fine-looking photo with a good amount of editing power, but Photoshop is usually the preferred tool of the pros, who want to work with vector artwork and add filters and other advanced effects. You may purchase Photoshop, or you may get an Internet-based subscription, which is more economical and easier than downloading the software and installing it on your computer.

Handy Tips for PSP Elements Users
First things first, I wanted to stress that PSP Elements is an excellent alternative to Photoshop.
The features are all the same and most do the same thing. The biggest difference is the interface.
PSP Elements is relatively easy to use because of the new user interface.
The menus and buttons are organised much better and by default it puts every tool into easy access when you need it.
Let’s talk about opening files in PSP Elements.
Image Transfer in PSP Elements
There are 4 main ways to open images in PSP Elements.
You can use image transfer, open in the browser, open from a file explorer or open from a content from another file.
Let’s cover the details.
Image Transfer
If you have a file in your computer that you want to open in PSP Elements you can use the image transfer feature to do that.
The image transfer feature is easy and a lot like sending files by email.
You can simply right click on any file that you want to import and go to File > Open with File Transfer.
You will have a box with a name like ‘images/Desktop/3be.jpg’
If you want to open a folder of images you can drag and drop the file into the box.
Don’t worry, there are no password requirements and you have complete control over what gets imported.
You can also send a file directly to PSP Elements, so you don’t have to transfer it to your computer.
Images in the PSP Elements window can be resized and moved much like you would in Photoshop.
You can even crop and add effects to the photo using these tools.
If you hover over the image box you will see a prompt for you to add a hotspot to the image so that you can drag it around and resize it to your preferences.
If you hover over the image it will also show you the original file’s details.
Using the file transfer feature will be a lot faster than opening a file using the web browser, but it’s not as easy as dragging and dropping a file to your computer and opening it in PSP Elements.
If you use image transfer to import files you will not be able to upload or save new files unless you import them or save them from the options.

The Spot Healing Brush tool uses pixels from its surroundings to repair a specific area of the image.
The Motion Blur filter creates a blurry appearance.
The Clone Stamp tool copies a rectangular area of pixels from one area of an image and pastes them into another area. This can be used for repairing an image, deleting unwanted sections or removing dust or scratches.
The Transfer-Function filter makes the edges of an image appear as if they are painted on the image.
The Gradient Texture filter creates a subtle gradient in an image.
The Gradient Tool lets you quickly fill an image with colors, gradients, patterns, or textures.
The Healing Brush tool lets you replace pixel content in a specific area with content from its surroundings.
The Quick Selection tool is used to select a specific area of the image. You can then use the Eraser tool to remove the pixels in that selection area.
The Stabilize filter uses a filter to make a badly framed image appear better.
The Smudge tool can be used to change the look of an object.
The Spatter filter creates a textured appearance in an image.
The Paint Bucket tool paints or pulls color from an image.
The Glow filter creates a soft glowing effect on an image.
