A few years ago, I wrote a piece describing the importance of team-building in terms of the value and trust of the brand. Now, there are various metrics and tools to measure and understand that, and more are on the way, but for more traditional brand managers what it really comes down to is personal relationships.

At the far end of the spectrum, there are the people we hire to do the things we don’t want to do – the marketing people, the creative directors, the sales and PR people. They are the “smart people”. They know how to do things.
Then there are the people you hire to do things you don’t want to do but must do because you need them to do it, like IT people, or legal departments, or data analysis or people to manage your supply chain.
But then there are the people you hire because you like them, or care about them, or they fit in with who you are and what you do. You hire them to make a difference.
It is those people, with all the idiosyncrasies that make them who they are, and that you personally relate to, who make you human. And it is human relationships that are the ultimate compliment a company can receive.
Not money. Not the supply of greenbacks. Not any medium that money resides on.
It is the human capacity to love and hate, to feel warmth and disapproval, to feel compassion and anger.
